About This Month’s Featured Audio

Heralded instantly upon publication by the critics, This Boy’s Life has come to be universally recognized as a true modern classic of autobiography.

Reviews/Praise

“This Boy’s Life is as fine as any of Wolff’s novels. It is honest and pure, without a trace of self-pity.”
      —The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

“A coming-of-age-with-pluck remembrance that is heartwarming and heartbreaking, deadly funny, deeply serious, achingly real.”
      —Seattle Post-Intelligencer

“A work of genuine literary art . . . as grim and eerie as Great Expectations, as surreal and cruel as The Painted Bird, as comic and transcendent as Huckleberry Finn.”
      —The Philadelphia Inquirer

“So absolutely clear and hypnotic . . . that a reader wants to take it apart and find some simple way to describe why it works so beautifully.”
      —The New York Times

“[This] extraordinary new memoir is so beautifully written that we not only root for the kid Wolff remembers, but we also are moved by the universality of his experience.”
      —San Francisco Chronicle

NPR and Chicago Public Radio’s Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me recorded a performance at the State Theater in downtown Minneapolis on June 24.

Host Peter Sagal and official judge and scorekeeper Carl Kasell were joined by panelists Adam Felber, Kyrie O’Connor, and Mo Rocca. Minnesotan and arctic explorer Ann Bancroft was the guest for the “Not My Job” segment.

It turns out the show has not one but two connections to Minnesota: As I was aware, host Peter Sagal lived here for a few years in the 1990s. What I did not know was that show producer Mike Danforth, with whom we work to produce the various WAIT WAIT recordings HighBridge puts out, is a Minnesota native. Yah, shure, den. No wunner we like him an’ da show.

Peter Sagal got in as much ribbing about Minnesota as he possibly could both before, between, and during the actual taping of the show. And Carl and the panelists were in their usual high form. It was a treat to have been there, and I’m looking forward to the broadcast this weekend.

It was clear there were librarians in the audience (some of our favorite people here at HighBridge). I heard people on the way in discussing the Wait Wait show that happened preceding ALA this previous March. And a call-in quiz participant, who identified herself as a librarian, received a warm welcome from the crowd.

If you have never seen a 'skyway' you can see a bit of one to the left. Didn't need to use it that night, as was gorgeous outside.

Matt Smith, who portrays the eleventh Doctor in the popular BBC television series Doctor Who, will take on a new role. He will portray Christopher Isherwood in a television adaptation of the acclaimed writer’s memoir Christopher and His Kind. Isherwood’s other works include A Single Man, which was made into a film and earned star Colin Firth an Oscar nomination.

Christopher and His Kind covers ten years in the writer’s life, from 1929-1939, from leaving Britain for Germany, traveling in Europe after Hitler’s rise to power, and his eventual move to the United States. It deals frankly with Isherwood’s experiences as a gay man, and the friendships he formed with other writers including E. M. Forster, W. H. Auden, and Virginia Woolf. The film is expected to be shown on BBC2 in the fall. No word yet of a U.S. broadcast.

According to The Guardian, the BBC is preparing a new television version of Sherlock Holmes. This time, the great detective (played by Benedict Cumberbatch), and his sidekick Watson (Martin Freeman) will be solving crimes in modern-day London.

The show is already filming and, based on a one-off pilot made last year, has been sold into international markets. Interest in the new version is bound to be high among Anglophiles, with novelist Mark Gatiss (star of The League of Gentlemen) and Steven Moffat (writer and new show-runner of Dr. Who) writing the scripts. I can’t wait to see it!
