NPR is going to the dogs

June 20th, 2011 by Jeff · Author/Narrator News

NPR is going to the dogs—in the best possible way, of course.

NPR Driveway Moments: Dog Tales, an audio-only celebration of extraordinary pooches and the lives that they have touched was released just a few weeks ago. And as you can tell from these pictures from NPR correspondent and Dog Tales host Andrea Seabrook, the recording had expert oversight: Seabrook’s two basset hounds, Flojo and Lazlo, accompanied her in the recording studio.

Flojo and Lazlo provide their human Andrea Seabrook with some last-minute direction before recording begins.

Lazlo (left) and Flojo (right) hydrate their throats in anticipation of their upcoming speaking parts.

If you’re an NPR listener, you’ve probably had your fair share of Driveway Moments. It’s when you’re driving home, listening to an NPR story. Suddenly, you find yourself in your driveway (or parking space or parking garage). Rather than turn the radio off, you stay in your car to hear the piece to the end. It’s a Driveway Moment.

Lazlo moves in for a close-up.

Lazlo and Flojo reward Andrea with attention after her good performance.

Dog Tales collects the most unforgettable NPR moments exploring canines and their human friends. The stories range from Westminster refinement to Turkish sheep herding and and even to dogs helping our troops in Afghanistan; some are hilarious, others touching, but all are unforgettable.

NPR’s talented and versatile Andrea Seabrook acts as host. Her hounds may have helped her in the studio, but you don’t have to worry about Basset bias; Labrador retrievers, German shepherds, and countless other breeds are included. Even the 165 lb. Kangal (seriously, have you seen these things?) makes an appearance.

NPR always provides the best possible listening experience, and we’re proud to add Dog Tales to the Driveway Moments library.

The Elusiveness of The Hedgehog

June 16th, 2011 by Julie · Author/Narrator News, HighBridge at the Movies

We’ve come across reference again to the French film version of Muriel Barbery’s novel The Elegance of the Hedgehog, this time in the form of a movie trailer (Le Hérisson or The Hedgehog).

The original movie was released in France in 2009, and an English subtitled version came out in 2010. It doesn’t seem to have had a wide US release, given how popular the book was here. It came and went before we all had a chance to trek down to a theater to see it.

We’ve posted the trailer below, but it’s in French. Translation, anyone?

Solving murders in between beers: Inspector Van Veeteren arrives in the U.S.

June 14th, 2011 by Jeff · Author/Narrator News, Hear It Here First

Poor Inspector Van Veeteren. All he wants to do is read books, drink beer, and maybe play a little chess, if anybody’s up for it. But instead, the reluctant hero of Håkan Nesser’s critically acclaimed mystery series is stuck solving murder after murder; and now, for the first time, we in the U.S. get the pleasure of tagging alongside.

Swedish mystery writer Håkan Nesser’s latest novel, The Inspector and Silence, is available on audio today from HighBridge, simultaneously with the print edition. HighBridge is also releasing today the four previous installments in the Inspector Van Veeteren series, all never before available on audio in the U.S.: Mind’s Eye, The Return, Woman with Birthmark, and Borkmann’s Point.

O, The Oprah Magazine writes of the series, “Snappish, sardonic, unsentimental, depressed, and quite possibly psychic, Van Veeteren is the most appealingly unlovable hero since TV’s crabby physician House.” And The Independent comments, “The clarity of Nesser’s vision, the inner problems of good and evil with which Van Veeteren struggles, recall the films of Bergman.”

Simon Vance, the voice behind several hundred audiobooks (including those of Nesser’s fellow Swede, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest author Stieg Larsson) has narrated the entire Van Veeteren series. Vance was Booklist magazine’s 2010 “Voice of Choice”; he continues to do a masterful job with Nesser’s work. You can check out an excerpt of each of the five titles here.

So don’t delay. Van Veeteren has beer to drink and murderers to catch. You don’t want to keep him waiting!

“The Borrower” debuts today

June 9th, 2011 by Jeff · Author/Narrator News, Publishing News

Librarians and booklovers rejoice! The Borrower, the critically acclaimed first novel by Rebecca Makkai, is available on audio today.

The Borrower follows Lucy Hull, a young librarian in Missouri, as she sets out on an impromptu and legally dubious road trip with her favorite patron—ten-year-old Ian Drake, who is fleeing his mother and the antigay classes she enrolls him in.

Booklist gave The Borrower a starred review; BookPage comments, “It may seem inappropriate to call a novel involving a kidnapping heartwarming, but that’s exactly what The Borrower manages to be.”

IndieBound has selected it for their June Indie Next List, writing, “Makkai’s writing is sharp and funny, and book lovers will enjoy the many references to well-known titles, from echoes of the road trip in Lolita to a chapter that is structured like a Choose Your Own Adventure story.”

This is Makkai’s first novel, but she’s definitely put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard?) before. Her stories have been anthologized by Best American Short Stories for the past four years running, and she’s been published in everything from Tin House to NPR’s Selected Shorts.

Makkai will also be touring to promote the book through June and July—and she’s starting at Magers & Quinn in Minneapolis! That’s practically in HighBridge’s backyard.

The Borrower audiobook is read by the extremely capable Emily Bauer (who also narrated the much-lauded The Girl Who Fell From the Sky).

An excerpt from The Borrower is now available on HighBridge’s website. Go ahead and take a listen!

Hobbit release date shifts Pi

June 6th, 2011 by Julie · HighBridge at the Movies

Last week, titles and release dates were announced for the two Hobbit movies being filmed by Peter Jackson in New Zealand. The first film is called The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and will open on December 14, 2012. The second film, The Hobbit: There and Back Again is scheduled to open on December 13, 2013.

Based on that news, the release date for Ang Lee’s film adaptation of Life of Pi has shifted back a week, to December 21, 2012, the better to take advantage of holiday moviegoing crowds, as well as getting out of the Hobbit’s way.

In other Hobbit news, Orlando Bloom, a veteran of the Lord of the Rings films, is set to return as Legolas in The Hobbit. Legolas doesn’t actually appear in the book, but Peter Jackson knows what he’s doing, right?

Excellent summer listening: Claire DeWitt and the City of the Dead

June 2nd, 2011 by Jeff · Author/Narrator News, Hear It Here First

Thank you, Sara Gran! Just in time for summer, a new audiobook from the author that Glamour calls "A latter-day Raymond Chandler" has been released to wide critical acclaim.

Gran’s Claire DeWitt and the City of the Dead follows tattooed, pot-smoking, new-agey private eye Claire DeWitt as she uses unorthodox means to investigate a murder in post-Katrina New Orleans; an excerpt is available on HighBridge’s website.

The mystery, which Booklist (starred review) calls "a flagrant first . . . for funky noir," has been grabbing loads of attention: Shelf Awareness ran a profile of Gran yesterday, where she admits to skipping school books for mysteries all her life; Library Journal (starred review) exclaims that "This is not to be missed"; Publishers Weekly (starred review) calls it "A captivating first . . . the haunting atmosphere of post-Katrina New Orleans lingers"; and the Christian Science Monitor has included it in their summer can’t-miss list.

So whether you’re at at the beach, in the airport, or staying in your own backyard, enjoy summer with the very best of audiobook mystery!
